RedBubble vs Fourthwall: Why Sell on Both?

No idea, but this is what I have learned since starting my design and print on demand journey.

I am going to start this off by saying I truly have no idea what I am doing, but I have loved learning along the way. About a month ago, I started creating digital designs. I want my designs to be unique, so I hand draw every element of my patterns and designs. After I got the hang of creating designs, I started my journey of learning about print on demand. This is how my journey has gone so far!

RedBubble

What is RedBubble?

RedBubble is a print on demand marketplace created for artists to be able to sell their art. They offer a variety of products designs can be printed on for consumers to buy, directly from their site.

Why I Chose RedBubble

The biggest reason I chose RedBubble was because it was free to sign up. I have experience selling on Etsy and felt overwhelmed by the amount of fees that had to be paid to open the account, start a listing, and after a sale is made. With RedBubble, I did not have to pay any fees to open the account or list my designs; I only pay fees after a sale is made.

Another reason I chose RedBubble was because they facilitate all customer service and process all sales. All I need to do is upload my designs to my Portfolio, select what products I want the design on, make sure the products look perfect, and save the listing. They also have their own customer base, so I don’t need to focus bringing in my own shop traffic. The ease of use and little to no financial risk as a seller was a huge benefit when making my decision.

What I Like Best so Far

Uploading designs is SO easy. When uploading a design, you’re able to select all the products at one time that you want the design on and align the placement. Having everything on one screen makes it less time consuming, and gets my designs in my shop faster.

Cons I Have Found

The biggest con I have with RedBubble is the percentage I make from items. I set a commission percentage on each category of product that I will make from a sale. Since I want my items to be affordable, I make approximately 30% from most sales. Which means for items like stickers, I make about $.87.

Another con is the limited types of products they offer. While they provide a range, it is not an all inclusive selection. I have found other products on different sites that I wished RedBubble would offer.

Would I recommend RedBubble?

If you are looking for a merchandise platform with little to no risk, full customer service, and an easy uploading system, I absolutely would recommend RedBubble! So far I have had a good experience with RedBubble and am excited to continue growing on their platform.

FourthWall

What is FourthWall?

FourthWall was originally created for content creators to be able to sell their own merch but has morphed into something much more. Not only do they offer print on demand products to put my designs on, they offer a full website and domain setup for free.

Why I Chose FourthWall

In my hours of researching print on demand merchandise shops, how to sell print on demand, etc., several people said it is most beneficial to have your own website. While I was doing research on how to start your own website, I realized in order for it to be cost effective, I would have to integrate a couple different platforms together. FourthWall eliminated me having to do that. I have my own domain with a built in ecommerce, all for free. This was again a low financial risk, no brainer decision for me.

What I Like Best so Far

My experience with their customer service has been amazing. I had an issue with my account, sent them an email on a Friday afternoon, and the problem was resolved in less than an hour. I was blown away!

I also love the wide variety of products they offer. I ordered myself a bathing suit the other day and am looking forward to trying out their pajama sets. The range of unique products offered is so fun for me and will, hopefully, be fun for buyers!

The last thing I will mention that I love about FourthWall is how user friendly it is. I have no experience in web design and felt like it was very easy to setup and navigate. It has so many features that I feel like I can really personalize and make it my own.

Cons I Have Found

The biggest draw back for me is the amount of time it takes to upload designs to products. There is not a mass feature like RedBubble. I have to individually pick an item, create the listing, upload the design, place the design, and save the listing. Some of this can be shortened by copying an existing listing, but it still takes a long time to adjust the listing, upload and place the design, and save the listing. I have found that it becomes daunting for me to upload a lot of designs at one time and need to space them out to not be overwhelmed.

Would I Recommend FourthWall?

Absolutely! If you want the freedom of your own website, an easy to use, integrated ecommerce platform, and other useful features for free, FourthWall will be perfect for you. I have thoroughly enjoyed setting up my website and creating it to what I want it to be. I am looking forward to venturing into other features they have, like the ability to sell digital files.

Why sell on both?

Now to give my opinion on the main question in this post! I recommend selling on both because they are vastly different from each other. When I started my journey, I mainly watched YouTube videos from creators who have been on these platforms for years. One of them gave a testimony on their merchandise shops being shut down without any notice and losing all their work. What I learned was having both can act as a safe guard for your sales and your work. With the ease of use of RedBubble, the freedom to design your own site with FourthWall and both being free to use, it is a great starting point for anyone not wanting to risk too much financially to start their small business.

Thank you!
